Hailing from Nowheresville USA, Rowan Newby writes heartfelt ear worms for the sentimentally inclined. While harkening back to the golden era of story-song singer/songwriters of the 1970s (Skip Spence, Michael Hurley, Ray Davies) as well as contemporaries (Beck, Bill Callahan, Chris Acker), Rowan's songs feel fresh and original despite the instant familiarity and sleeve worn influences. He spent most of his teens and 20's developing his craft in his bedroom and diy venues bouncing between family in New York City and rural Georgia. Working graveyard shift concierge jobs at old hotels and sleepwalking through film school. Finding solace and inspiration from copious nature trails along the East Coast. He emerges now after a long hiatus of soft releases and personal growth following his 2015 digital only release of his EP "Odes". Newby's latest album, "Some Hippie You Turned Out To Be", continue the tradition 60s/70s inspired songsmithing, Bedroom Americana and Outsider-indie but with an apt poetic sensibility and humorous bite to the lyricism.

Some Hippie You Turned Out to Be
"I taught myself how to play an old nylon string beater my dad gave me when I was 14 years old and started writing by 16. Here in my 30s I've really just accumulated a wealth of songs that live on the shelf. Wasn't necessarily my intention to make a "folk" album but when you play acoustic guitar long enough these tender time honored melodies just fall outta yuh. So I realized I had a good collection of old and new songs alike. Recorded it with my best buddy and brilliant producer Noel Brown in his basement studio over the course of 2+ years, really leaning and growing together in the process. To me that time spent with it gives the record something more inherently home grown and special and earnest. It also gave me the time I needed to perfect all the stylized poeticisms and sardonic humor in the lyrics." - Rowan Newby
